This print illustrating the birth of printing is slightly adapted from artwork for The Printing Museum in Houston, expressing artist Ewan Tallentire's vision of the subject beyond the limitations of the original medium. The central image is the Gutenberg Press, an invention new to the world of 1440, which could quickly print and widely distribute ideas that would fan world events into flame. The strong wooden pillars of the Gutenberg Press frame the bed on which the Gutenberg Bible was born, against a background of brown reminiscent of both wood and medieval ink. Beside the press are the words "Gutenberg Press 1440." The capital letters, showing their inheritance from scribal writing, are taken from the illuminated letters which were still hand-drawn in the Gutenberg Bible. The small letters indicative of block type are from letters printed in the Gutenberg Bible in a font still readable today.
