Description

Aviation Fine Art Print - "The Red Baron Over the Somme"

The story:
This is the Red Baron's most colorful aircraft, the Albatros DVa. Its fuselage and wings were painted red as he traditionally painted his aircraft, but the wings and the tail were painted in a lozenge pattern. Manfred von Richthofen flew the Albatros over the battlefields of the Somme in 1916, and considered the hunting good. But as aerial tactics and aircraft improved, the hunting worsened for the individual pilot, and on April 21, 1918, the Red Baron, again near the Somme River, was killed.

Print details:
Limited edition (50) print of original artwork by Ewan Tallentire. This style of art could be said to be a true caricature (not a cartoon); the Albatros is exaggerated to bring out its character. Ewan started doing simple caricatures for t-shirts, but found himself putting more and more detail and background into them. The background of this print is from a 1916 aerial photo of the Somme. Eventually Ewan did a series of art prints turning the caricatures into serious aviation art.

Print details:
High-quality printing on acid-free stock. 8" x 10" with approximately 1/8" white border. The print does not come framed but is suitable for framing, as shown in one of the pictures. Shipped flat with cardboard backing.
